Not all mines in central Colorado are from the 1880's. Although the second half of the nineteenth century did enjoy the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, the Latchaw Mine wasn't begun until 1901. Located seven miles west of Buena Vista on Mount Princeton, the Latchaw Mining, Tunneling and Milling Company's operation involved digging a lengthy tunnel into the mountain in order to reach the large vein of gold ore and high-grade silver.
To reach it, take CR 306 west to CR 321, then head south approximately 4.7 miles to CR 327. This four-wheel-drive road with large ruts and steep hills cuts through privately-owned land, so please obey any posted signs. When the road forks, always head left. The right-hand forks are old burro trails that dead end. Crossing the Colorado Trail, continue heading west. After driving as far as you can, park and hike the rest of the way in. The trail is pretty clear, though narrow. Beginning steeply, it levels off to become an easy walk. While enjoying beautiful vistas along the way, please remain cautious, as there are drop-offs in certain spots.
