Delta lies at the confluence, or delta, of the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers and is filled with culture and history. There are 30 buildings registered as local historical sites, eight as state sites, and four as national sites. Fort Uncompahgre, established in 1828 as a fur trading post, lives again as a reconstructed living-history museum. Located 20 miles north of Montrose and 50 miles south of Grand Junction, the "City of Murals" promotes the arts with murals adorning buildings and sculptures scattered throughout the town. The Delta County Historical Museum houses fossils and a butterfly exhibit and is itself housed in the old fire station.
The Devil's Thumb Golf Course is described by its architect as a "prairie style" course. Other ways of enjoying the outdoors are hiking the Dominquez-Escalante National Wilderness Area and visiting local canyons to see rock art. Of course, you can also spend time in the six town parks. In the evening, take in a show at the historic Eagle Theatre, an Egyptian Revival movie house.
