Located twenty-six miles northeast of Gunnison it is nestled between 11,000 foot mountains and beside Quartz Creek. Pitkin is the perfect all-season vacation base to hike, fish, camp, bike, Jeep, horseback ride, and spectacular scenery. Pitkin was founded by Frank Curtiss, George P. Chiles and Wayne Scott in early 1879. Pitkin, originally named Quartzville, was Colorado's first mining camp west of the Continental Divide.
